I’ve been on Interpals for years, but lately I feel the platform isn’t what it used to be. A few years ago, there were more people genuinely interested in language exchange and cultural connection, learning about different lifestyles, traditions, and ways of thinking.
In the past 2–3 years, I’ve noticed a big increase in users from Asia and Arab countries, especially Indonesia. It’s not a bad thing, diversity is great, but it’s clear that the focus has shifted. Many people seem less interested in real language or cultural exchange and more in casual chatting or dating.
At times, Interpals feels more like a social or dating app than a community for learning. Add to that the fake profiles and bots, and it’s harder to find meaningful exchanges.
Sometimes I uninstall the app and come back hoping to find that old spirit again… but it’s getting harder each time. Does anyone else feel the same way?
