And I have my doubts about Lord Acton. Nobody has ever had absolute power. Perhaps it would liberate rather than corrupt. It's hard to imagine anything corrupting more than the precariously held power in, say, the United States.

G'day, not an historian myself (just someone with a history degree). I'm almost as fascinated as I am horrified by the Ukraine/Russia/NATO/Neocon calamity and rejoined this site mainly in the hope of getting some direct insights. All we have access to here in NZ is propaganda (of which the Russian is much less sophisticated but tends to contradict observable reality and common sense rather less).
