In sophomore we usually have around 4 exams, but it depends on your studying, you won't have the same exams as someone having different studies. And the exams when you are sophomore count and help you to be graduate. They are as important as those you have in last year.
In high school usually we don't use semester, we use trimester. We don't have any exams at the end of the trimester. Only training for the "big" exam in June ^^
I know about it as it's a part of our system. Most of my friends don't understand as well and have not this.
It studying in 2 years, with school and training in company (depends on your studies) and you get a diploma. Generally it's done in high school but you are not consider at the student in high school as your grade is higher. It's really interesting ! :p

It's better for you then, only 3 kind of exams :) We have national exam for sciences, literature, social, and technologic studies. As I studied social I had : sociology, economics, geography, history, math, english, spanish, sport, english oral as english was my specialization. And when I was a sophomore I got french (writting & oral), sciences and another exam. I had to passed all those exams !
I am not in uni but I was graduate from high school last year. I am doing a two years post A level course. I am studying International Trade :)
