Yeah, I can understand mexican spanish, is quite similar, its more similar to my spanish than a dialect, they have different words and expressions, but the rest is almost the same.
And well Portuguese, Italian and French are similar to spanish, you can understand a little bit without knowing anything. Because all of them came from the latin, so there are some words that are alike between them.
